John started in 1995, with a view to selling and promoting his art work in a genuinely alternative way, to this end Hayvend has had installations in national Galleries and cafes alike, selling thousands of it's unique artworks. The first Hayvend machine was found during a Sunday walk along the Bristol docks. Hand made boxes and artwork were made, and the first Hayvend Installations, using this machine were placed during a solo exhibition of John's work, an open studio and the Watershed Gallery, all in Bristol. The following year John used this machine for an installation in the bar of the I.C.A., where there has been a Hayvend Installation ever since, moving to its current location in the I.C.A. bookshop. The project grew with more installations in London and across the UK, working with new, purpose made vending machines, sporting the distinctive yellow and black Hayvend livery. |
