'SUPERWEED' IS THE NEW WEAPON IN
GUERILLA GARDENERS' GENETIC FOOD FIGHT
Guerilla gadeners are being armed with a 'superweed' kit to sabotage genetically modified (GM) crops which could meve from test sites to farm production in the UK as early as April.
The latest weapon in the war against "Frankenstein food" is the Natural Reality SuperWeed Kit, financed by the Cultual Terrorist Agency (CTA) and availble free through the Intenet, and HAYVEND.
Super-strong GM crops are scientifically desiged to survive dousing with weedkiller. The idea of the kit is to mix up GM seeds and ordinary weed seeds and then to grow them together, to produce a mutant 'superweed'.
Activist Michael Boorman bought GM oilseed rape from Monsanto, one of the key players in GM food, and smuggled it through Customs from Canada.
Rachel Baker, co-founder of the CTA, said: "This an aggressive tactic to raise the stakes and raise the issues. It's a debate about production and distibution." She said that the kit is so far untested.
The Departmet of the Environment said: "All GMO releases are prohibited unless eplicit consent has been granted by the Secretary of State. No consent has been granted in this case. Anyone releasing GM seeds would be liable to prosecution."
Friends of the Earth (FoE) said the Government had lost control in giving the green light to farm production of GM crops. Any U-turn means they are now open to protracted legal wangles with the industry, according to an FoE spokesman.
Meanwhile, the case against six activists named in a legal action by Monsanto was adjourned last week. The company has issued injunctions against genetiX snowba11, a directactio campaign which invites people to pull up GM crops. This means that if anyone else takes action as part of this specific campaign they could face a two-year jail science.
