Pop art to go

If you've visited the Hayward Gallery recently you may have noticed an intriguing, bright yellow vending machine in the stairway between the upper and lower floors. Formerly a sanitary towel dispenser, it's now a Hayvend. Insert a mere £2, and a little yellow box is dispensed, containing a work by one of 100 artists - surely one of the more novel ways to acquire a piece of original contemporary art? You don't know what you'll get - it could be anything from a painting or sculpture to a comic strip, cassette tape or toy. The concept was dreamed up by John Hayward, using an old vending machine he found in a skip. If you're interested, a list of the artists involved can be found at www.hayvend.com
